In her directorial debut, Kristen Stewart has adapted the autobiography of the writer and swimmer Lidia Yuknavitch in a manner transcending the established conventions of the biopic. Instead of offering a linear biography, the film is narrated from the central protagonist's subjective vantage in a corporeal, fragmentary and intimate manner.
Lidia grows up in 1970s Oregon in an environment shaped by violence and alcohol. As a talented swimmer, she seeks refuge in the water, yet pain and self-harm continue to haunt her. It is only when she starts to write that she is able to make sense of her own story and find a language for her experiences of trauma and loss.
