A bit more than ten years after the squatting of the former Bethanien Hospital and its renaming as the Georg-von-Rauch-Haus, this fictionalized documentary revisits thirteen former squatters—along with Karl Marx (who soon departs again) and, above all, his daughter Jenny. Narrative film elements bring to life the dreams and ideas of the individuals portrayed—and of the '68 generation as a whole. The film documents their life paths and current circumstances, ranging from a heavy drinker and an entrepreneur to the "last rebel," Rio Reiser, who also provides the film's score.

Michael Verhoeven’s Meyerhoff adaptation is indeed "the funniest German film in years” (Filmstarts). BUT, and we cannot stress this enough: it is also so much more. Bruno Alexander delivers the breakout performance of the season as the principal protagonist—including the most poignant rendering of Tainted Love ever. The film oozes irony and a profound understanding of life’s big questions. You’ll laugh a lot, to be sure, but you’ll also be wondrously moved. Should Senta Berger and Michael Wittenborn not feature on your list of top ten actors yet, they certainly will once you’ve seen this movie.
