When this (Berlin) classic appeared in cinemas in 1981 (three years after the publication of the book) it caused quite a storm. This great German independent film by director Uli Edel develops its strong narrative power by constantly keeping its young protagonist at the centre of attention. With its sounds of the discotheque, the Deutschlandhalle, and its perspective on West Berlin, this film is a cinematic event.
